Household Plastics
If you are tossing any of these into your regular trash bin, you are cheating the recycling companies out of valuable recyclable materials:
- snack food packaging
- cereal box liners
- non carbonated drink bottles
- margarine tubs,
- deli food containers
- whipped toppings containers
- detergent bottles
- milk jugs
- garbage containers
- water pipes (plumbing)
- bleach bottles
- household cleansers bottles
These items are High Density Poly Ethylene, HDPE, which is a form of recyclable plastic used in consumer product manufacturing. Scrap HDPE can be collected, sorted and cleaned by cities with an active recycling program and then sold to scrap companies to recoup the recycling costs.
We all need to do our part to reduce, reuse and recycle. If your city offers a recycling program, make sure you participate. If your city does not yet have a recycling program, make some noise (phone calls, emails, meetings) with your legislators to put one in place.
