Shopping for Party Supplies

We were going to stay home and have a quiet night on New Year’s Eve, but all of a sudden we ended up inviting people over and now we are having a party. That is fine – it just puts me in a bit of a panic to be able to buy all the party supplies, extra food, and the champagne – plus totally clean the house and make ready for a house full of people. Its been ages since we had people over for an evening – I’m actually looking forward to it.

The Month of Christmas Parties

December means more than holiday shopping. It also means every weekend is booked at all the hotels and restaurants for the holiday parties. It is kind of fun to be downtown and see all the people dressed up in suits and bright, pretty dresses. Just be careful on the drive home – there will be a lot more drunks on the roads these next four weekends. Watch out for them and give them a wide berth.

Old Westerns

Sometimes when Iam looking for something out of the ordinary on TV I come across an old western. They sure don’t make them like they used to. I loved the old John Wayne movies, the Clint Eastwood movies, and I remember the great TV series that came on Sunday nights, Bonanza. There was another TV series, Green Valley, The Rifleman, and even Little House on the Prairie. I admire the people who lived back then – having to be so resourceful and self reliant.

All the Little Monsters

We had a nice turn out of children tonight. I was concerned that having Halloween on a Monday night might keep some children home or shorten their fun. We had the first couple of monsters ring our bell at quarter to six and a pretty much steady parade of trick or treaters until about 8:30 tonight. We gave away three huge bags of candy, but I held back a handful of Baby Ruth candy bars and I’m glad they stopped coming before I had to go into my stash. It was really nice seeing all the cute kids and watching them smile so big when I handed out the candy.

CNN for News

Lately I find myself on the HD CNN cable channel for my news. I know a lot of people like Fox News. That channel makes me nauseous – they are all exaggerated, slanted toward hysteria and frankly I wonder about the accuracy about a lot of their stories. CNN is often the first, and sometimes the only, news media represented in breaking stories. I like the way they show up before the spin doctors get a chance to cover up what is happening. And their news anchors are very well spoken, even keeled and professional.

Titans Win Again!

Well, bless their little pea pickin’ hearts – the Tennessee Titans have won again! This makes three wins in a row for the new team under their first new coach in 16 years. Coach Mike Munchak is doing well. I guess I have to pay up my bet with Nazas tomorrow morning. I didn’t think the team could win this many games – last year they went 0 and 8, and I had pretty much given up on them.

Tammy’s Daughter Sings

If you were a fan of Tammy Wynette, I bet you will like to hear her daughter sing. Tammy and George Jones had one daughter together, and Tammy had three other daughters from her first marriage to Byrd.

With George Jones in his 80′s and not singing much any more, Georgette Jones is the one who is singing now – and she sounds hauntingly like her famous mother.

She was featured in a duet with her famous father, George on his last album. It is really good – one of my new favorites. Give “You and Me and Time” a listen when you get a chance.

Big Weekend Plans

This weekend is Labor Day weekend – the end of summer for most people in the U.S. On the Est Coast, it means back to school next week and the last chance for a beach getaway. Most of the public pools will close for the season. I’ll be packing up the beach towels and sand toys for next year. What have you got planned?

I don’t know why I even turn on the TV. There are no good shows on TV most of the time, and summer is the worst ever. There are some really stupid, ridiculously stupid, shows on the cable channels. I seriously cannot believe that America is this stupid – to be in these cheesy reality and judge shows, and worse, that they are stupid enough to sit on the couch and watch them

Play About Patsy Cline

This play is coming back to the Ryman Auditorium this summer. I saw the first show had many years ago. I believe this is the third time it has shown here in town. It is a wonderful tribute to Patsy Cline and the actress, Mandy Barnett, not only look like Patsy but I swear to God she sings just like her. It’s a great show – come see it if you can.

Mardi Gras Party

This weekend is the kickoff of some serious Mardi Gras parties. There are huge celebrations all weekend in Mobile, Alabama, New Orleans and Galveston, Texas.

There are a lot of people in Memphis and Atlanta that used to live in New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina came through and they had to leave. But even though they don’t live in New Orleans any longer, they still want to celebrate their Mardi Gras. I hope this helps spread the fun and revelry of parades and parties to other cities – we all need to have a good time.

Last night on the David Letterman Show, he was asking people if they consider Denmark to be a Scandinavian country or not. He said that he knows geographically it is near the other Scandinavian countries, but he says the he thinks of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Greenland as the only Scandinavian countries.

I disagree with him. I will dig out an atlas to be sure, but I am pretty sure that most people also consider Denmark to be in the group.

Today we will have a big picnic lunch out on the lake and then we’ll go downtown to watch the big fireworks show. I bought some fireworks to have at home, in case the big show gets rained out. Let’s hope the weather holds up and we all have a nice time tonight watching the show.

Why are we so superstitious? Just because a day of the week falls on the monthly calendar with a date that people have deemed unlucky is no reason to freak out. For hundreds of years the date, Friday the Thirteenth, has been considered an unlucky day and date, so people go to extreme to protect themselves against the bad luck of that day. Well, some people think that 13 is a lucky number. So while some are fretting all day, others are celebrating. How strange this modern life!

Spongebob Squarepants is not suitable for young children. There is way too much sexual innuendo on this cartoon. They say things like “Everyone wants to get into bikini bottom.” That is not what young children need to hear.

Making Friends

This afternoon I decided to be sociable and I spent a few hours next door with my new neighbors. We made a big pitcher of Sangria. It would have been nice to sit out on the deck sipping the Sangria, but it has been rainy and cold all day, so we gathered in her living room, instead. The guys wanted to watch football, so we left them in front of the TV and went into the dining room. Julie and I sat around the table looking at photos of their trip to Cabo. I’ve never been to that part of Mexico and would love to go sometime.

Around 5, she put a couple of t-bones on the grill and we had a nice steak dinner with buttered new potatoes, fresh cut green beans and garlic bread. Nothing fancy, but it sure tasted good and it was nice to be with my new friends so I could relax and have a good time.
