Warren is home for the summer and his dad has informed him that this past week of sleeping until noon is his only luxury. Time for Warren to get busy and find a summer job. He had looked half-heartedly before he left school, but it’s getting serious at this point – his spending money for the next school year depends on what he can make this summer.

My friend Tom has offered him a spot on his work crew building decks on new homes. It’s good money and relatively easy to learn. The only drawback is he can’t work if it’s raining and we’ll need to spot him some money to buy a pair of good workboots.

There’s a website called Work Boots USA that gives a quick overview of the different types of boots and it carries all the major brands. You can easily tell from the short description under each photo if the boot has a soft toe, hard toe or steel toe – the type of toe you need depends upon the type of work you’ll be doing and what kind of workplace hazards you have to protect your feet from.

I told Warren that if he picks out a pair of work boots from that site I’ll put them on my charge card. They can have the boots delivered by the weekend and he can start work for Tom on Monday.

Ever since I was a teenager I’ve loved New York City. We went on several trips to New York while in school. I’ll never forget the 8th grade trip to Manhattan. We boards large commercial buses at 3:00 in the morning and slept during most of the drive up, spent the entire day doing tourist things and drove back the same night. IT was exhausting but thrilling and I jumped at every chance after that to go to New York for another visit.

Most of my friends that left the medspa company have accepted positions with a new franchise that is based in New York. Sadly, that means most of them have had to pack up and move from here to New York. So now I don’t have the chance for the occasional lunch or cocktails to stay in touch with most of my friends. It’s down to a few emails and occasional phone calls.

Alexa is the last of the old crew to take a job with the new company. We had lunch today at our favorite Sushi place to say goodbye. She is excited about the move and I’m thrilled for her! She’s going to stay with one of our friends already there, sleeping on the futon while she looks for place of her own. To help with that I put her in touch with one of the best real estate agents in Manhattan, Dottie Herman.

Dottie is a broker with Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate, the largest real estate company in New York. I had met Dottie years ago at a real estate function in Las Vegas and kept her business card just in case I would have the opportunity to move to New York. Alas, it is Alexa who is getting that opportunity and I’m happy to share the contact information with her.

I don’t know who the others used to help them find a new home, but if I was looking for Manhattan New York real estate I would call Dottie first. As soon as Alexa finds her new condo and gets settled in, I’ll be flying to New York for a visit with my old buddies.

I can’t do that. I’ll drive to work a different way at least 2 or 3 times each week. I really don’t like to do the same thing over and over. I like variety and I like to enjoy my drive to work – not just endure it. Every morning I see new flowers blooming, new pets in the yards, and new cars sharing the road with me. I love starting each day as a new adventure!

But sometimes keeping up with all the numbers without names attached can be very challenging. I was happy to find a web site that lets me look up numbers, including cell phone numbers. It can be hard to find a good place for Reverse Cell Phone Lookup. And a cool part of this site is that if you don’t want your number to be given out, you can subscribe to a “No Call List” and they will remove your number from their database.

I think at some point in each of our lives, everyone in my family has worked in a restaurant for some reason or another. I was a bartender and I loved it. Wish I had my own bar, but that’s the middle class American’s dream, isn’t it?

If I could make my dream come true, I would start a new business someplace where I want to live, pack up and leave here. One of the things stopping me is getting all the financing I would need. Banks are harder to deal with every day and I’m not interested in taking on partners. For one thing I want autonomy in making the business decisions and for another I don’t want to share the profits from my own hard work with people who don’t do anything except put in the start up money.

That’s why I’ve been looking into Business Loans online. There is a website, www.advancerestaurantfinance.com, that specializes in small business and restaurant loans. They are more flexible than banks and they have a simple application process that you can start right online. I like the fact that they are located and licensed int he state of California, so I am seriously considering making my dreams come true with the first step of finding the financing I’ll need.

A friend of mine is a convenience store manager, on the morning shift. I see her once a week or so, and I try to make a point to buy a few things from inside the store in addition to buying my gas there, as she gets bonuses based on the sales from sodas, candy bars, potato chips, and the other things they sell inside.

I was distressed to find that someone robbed her store last week. Thank goodness she was not working that night and the person running the store was not hurt, but it is disconcerting to think they my friend is truly in danger of being robbed or shot at any time. The thieves took a van and rammed the front doors with the van, then hauled the ATM machine and cash register into the back of the van and drove off.

This morning they are traffic bollards across the front of the store to prevent anyone from ramming the front doors again. Bollards are the tall round posts that re installed in the pavement and spaced a few feet apart to restrict traffic.

It’s a shame we have to resort to obvious crime deterrents like bollards in front of your place of business, even in the nicer neighborhoods. When I mentioned this to my boss, he thought getting bollards would be a good idea for our own building. With a little surfing we were able to find a website that provides all kinds of bollards – I never knew there were so many different types and uses – and we found exactly what we want to order. We will need movable bollard because of our landlord and the lease restrictions. That’s no problem, the same website carried movable and temporary bollards, too.

We used the website www.trafficguard.net because their site has color photos of the different types of bollards and clear, easy to read and understand descriptions of their products. You don’t have to be in the construction business to figure out which ones will meet your needs, and if you have any questions you can call their tool free number and talk to a customer service representative before placing your order.

Real estate agents and brokers have the need for a very specialized database, with information relevant to their industry. Agents need to keep track of critical documents, such as offer letters, contracts and closing statements. Most agents use some sort of database to keep track of clients and prospects, and often merge those names and addresses into letters, envelopes and postcards as part of their marketing campaigns.

A successful agent is very busy and keeping organized and efficient is critical to their success. Computers have been a great tool for agents, but until now finding software specific to real estate agents has been hard to do. Now there is help for real estate agents with a software package called Agent Organizer. If you have an interest in software for real estate agents, take a look at the website for Agent Organizer and see if this new program meets your needs. You can try it out for free for 15 days so if you decide to buy it you will know what to expect and how to use it.

They say that a well run business will appreciate its employees and value its clients or customers. One good, inexpensive way to demonstrate a company’s appreciation is the use of recognition programs. A good recognition program not only praises an employee for business achievements but also for personal milestones, such as birthdays, employment date anniversaries, and even encouragement during setbacks, such as serious illness or surgeries. Acknowledging these milestones or personal moments with a premium quality greeting card is the perfect way to express that you care and appreciate your employees.

Our Human Resources Manager ordered a collection of all occasion cards from gallerycollection.com and had them custom imprinted, but we also pass them them around to the rest of the staff for personal notes and signatures before presenting them with a flourish or small ceremony to the recipient. The Business Birthday Cards are a nice way to help celebrate employee and client birthdays. I also like that the envelopes are a classy, deckle-edged heavy stock, and they are made of recycled paper.

I’ve been fascinated with the thought of an atomic watch for years. The thought of a watch that automatically checks throughout the day to validate the correct time is just amazing, and if they can do that, then most likely they can also update what timezone you are in when traveling.

Casio has several atomic watches in their G-Force line, which is another strong selling point in my book. G-Force means it is super tough, and lots of guys need a tough watch – especially guys who work in construction or the military, and guys who go hunting and camping need a watch that is rugged. If you need a great birthday gift or even a going away gift for an active, outdoorsy guy in the office, you should take a look at the website www.bluedial.com and consider a casio watch. I would certainly get one for my boss on a special occasion.

My daughter-in-law is in the process of moving to her new apartment this week. I rounded up all the large empty boxes I could find and sent them over to her so she could get started packing. The new apartment has an extra bedroom and is more spacious, so I’m glad she’s moving up.

She’ll be turning the extra bedroom into a home office so she can do more work from home and not have to pay for child care, plus she’ll be saving cash by not having to commute. Of course, setting up the home office will take a bit of cash, but you can’t make money if you don’t spend money.

We’ll be underwriting some of the home office equipment to help her out. Since we are on a tight budget, we are looking for ways to save as much money as we can, yet we can’t always get the cheapest products – there are some quality and reliability issues to consider as well as price.

A great source for money saving coupons is a website I found online. There are a variety of coupons to save significant money on Dell small business computers. We are also going to need some home office furniture, at the very least a computer desk and task chair.

I’m not sure which way to advise her on a printer for her new home office. I haven’t had much luck with the last ones I’ve bought. At the moment I’m using a cheap laser printer that only prints black and white, but it is a workhorse and I can use refilled toner cartridges, which saves a lot of money. I think for the sake of just getting started, she should probably have one like what I’m using, and when she starts making money she can upgrade to a color printer later.

If you own or run a small or medium sized business and are ready to take that business to the next level, then perhaps a business coach can help you get to that level. After all, don’t you want good advice from someone who is successful and can prove that their advice works?

Like a sports coach, a business coach can guide and encourage you to grow your business, make it more profitable, and break-through every kind of challenge.

How do you find a great business coach? By going to the website of Action Coach Business Coaching!

When you work with an ActionCOACH, he or she can help your marketing, sales, training and operations. The website has a handy “Business Health Check” that you can use to see which areas of your business would benefit from having a business coach involved. The site also has a business library and collection of YouTube videos to help you.

Let the ActionCOACH become your confidant and your mentor, and take your business to the next level.

Finally someone has come up with a new way to best use technology for helping job seekers. Instead of going to a site with hundreds of thousands of job listings that you can only search by using keywords, this new site uses technology to match skill sets against the right Job listing for your unique skills.

It is a great concept that saves job seekers a lot of time and many false starts, as key words are much more general than skill sets. By signing up for REALMatch and letting technology do the work for you based on skill sets, you will end up with better targeted leads in your search for a new job.
