With everyone tightening up their budgets and looking for ways to cut costs and save money to offset the huge increase in the cost of gas - its right at $4 a gallon most places around here now - I have had to cut my grocery shopping budget. My fresh vegetables from the garden help a little, but to be honest I need to save about $40 a week from my grocery bill.

So today I decided to shop at Aldis and see if they had any bargains worth picking up to stock the pantry. I was pleasantly surprised to see what a nice variety they have. However, most foods are not a recognizable name brand - they are probably house brands that Aldi has arranged to buy in quantity. the best cost savings seemed to be in canned vegetables and boxed bake goods. So we’ll give a few of them a try and if they are good enough to pass my family’s taste test, I will shop there again soon.

We tried a small vegetable garden this year and I must say that it is a great success. We have so many tomatoes off of just 2 tomato plants that we are already giving tomatoes away to friends at work. The jalepeno pepper plant is putting out all the hot peppers I’ll need for the rest of the year. My green pepper plants are very slow to bear but they are strong and healthy and there will be an abundance of actual peppers in just a couple weeks.

We are thrilled at how well these basic vegetables have done and I think next year we’ll go ahead and have a full garden. I have plans to put in a raised bed over in the side yard and I want to grow a bigger variety of vegetables. I found a great site for organic seeds and sprouting supplies, so I can plan the whole thing and set up a schedule and make a serious effort at growing my own healthy foods. Years ago I had great success with a huge garden in Virginia. Everything I planted was from seed or sprout - no cheating with mature plants bought at the hardware store!

Maybe you already know about the Handy Pantry web site for organic seeds and supplies. If you’ve got any gardening tips - especially for raised beds - please share them with me in a comment. I would love to hear them.

California continues to burn. The photos on Yahoo News are fascinating in a macbre way. The view from Sausalito eastward to the San Franciso skyline is usually crisp and clear except for a couple hours of fog in the mornings. Now it is a thick brown-gray haze of smoke from all the wildfires. It must be very difficult to even breathe for hundreds of miles around the City by the Bay. Tourism is down - huge sections of Hwy 1 are closed, people are being evacuated, and there is no view of the ocean to attract the tourists as the smoke is everywhere and the danger is very real.

The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services maintains an awesome website that has an interactive Google map of the fires. You can click on a fire icon and a text box opens with detail of that particular fire area, including current status of containment and the number of acres affected. Click here to see the current map - it is very disconcerting. As of this morning there are over 1,000 wildfires burning out of control, with weather forecasts of more storms with high winds and lightning. So things are not looking good for No Cal.

Last year the California fires making the news were the southern California wildfires. All around Los Angeles and San Diego there were dozens of major fires that took months to put out. Even the upscale and exclusive Malibu Beach area lost multi million dollar homes to the fires. People were being forced to leave their homes and camp out at the San Diego football stadium for over a week while firefighters battled to save entire neighborhoods.

This year it is northern California, with over 1,000 fires burning today and the news shows airing clips of officials crying for helping - they don’t have enough manpower or resources to even show up at all the fires burning, most of them caused by lightning strikes over the past several days.

It’s hard to imagine that areas so close to the Pacific ocean are suffering from severe drought this early in the summer season and that dry trees and brush all over the far western states is a waiting tinderbox.

There’s no way I could ever agree to make California my state of primary residence. There are just too many natural disasters waiting to take your property and your life. It’s a nice place to visit, but I’ll never live there.

Still looking good for our planned camping trip this weekend. The weather forecast so far says no rain. Still too early to tell, though, so we are keeping the dates in pencil and if it turns bad at the last minute we can change the date without much trouble.

One of the fun parts of this weekend is that my girlfriend and her hubby are going camping, too, and they have a small bass boat. They’ve offered to camp close to us, depending upon what campsites are available at the lake, and take us out on the boat a few times. That would be great!

If they are going to be nice enough to take us fishing, I want to buy something nice to give them as a thank you gift. I can order something online tonight and have it delivered in time for our trip on Friday. I found a nice web site, American Marine Supply, with lots of nautical supplies and novelties. They have all kinds of boating supplies and even nautical jewelry. Since I don’t know what gear they already have, I’m trying to find something either useful, funny, or pretty.

I’ll surf through the web site and see what kind of boat accessories they have and order the gift tonight. If we don’t go camping this weekend, I can save it for the weekend that we do all go, but I hope the weather holds and we can go - I’m looking forward to it.

We want to introduce our grandson to camping and have been waiting for the right time to take off a couple days from work. Now that we have everything covered at work, we are waiting for the right weather. Looks like we have a good chance of good weather this coming weekend. I don’t want to be sleeping in a tent during a thunderstorm, especially if that’s his first night camping.

We have a great tent, sleeping bags, cooler and plenty of fishing gear. Yesterday we stopped by Wal-Mart to see if we needed anything else to pick up and found a few things. I bought a couple flashlights and a can of bug spray. We’ll wait to buy the groceries until we get closer to the weekend and know for sure that we’re going.

So cross your fingers for us that we have a good weekend!

Gas prices have kept going up and are over $4.00 a gallon now in the Franklin gas stations. Closer to my house it hovers around $3.89 per gallon. This is a huge increase over last year’s prices of around $2.39 - I remember freaking out that it was over $2.50 in San Francisco. Now I hear that is around $4.50 after just one year since I was last out there.

My sister was sweet enough to suggest that we get a cash back or gas rebate type of credit cards to help save a few extra cents off each gallon of gas that we buy. I hadn’t really thought of that and decided to look into it. I used the credit cards club website to read up on the gas rebate programs and find a good card to apply for online. Their top four card recommendations for gas rewards programs are all types of Discover Cards. The one that caught my eye says that you get a 5% rebate on all gasoline and auto maintenance purchases. If you paid for an oil change lately you will know that the cost of an oil change has gone up about the same rate as the cost of gasoline these past several months. So you save on oil changes and other auto related things beside just gas, and 5% is a nice little sum to put back into your wallet at the end of the day.

Is it just me or does some “expert” come out every dang summer and announce that flip flops are bad for your feet? Personally, I’m sick of “experts” making broad generalizations on things in my daily life and then not being held accountable for their proclamations when proven wrong.

Like the “experts” who every year predict that this coming year will have lots of terrible hurricanes. Well, duh. Every year does have the chance that there will be terrible hurricanes, and if a hurricane happens to rip through your own neighborhood then you most likely will be calling that hurricane terrible and a few other choice names. But the fact is that not every year has terrible hurricanes, some years are worse than others.

I like flip flops. I have been wearing them since a little kid and they are my footwear of choice during the hot summer months and certainly better than going barefoot. There is not much difference between a pair of cheap flip flops and expensive designer thongs sandals other than the “design” and the price tag. I really don’t see how flip flops can be bad for my feet when I’ve been wearing them every summer for over 50 years.

Had lunch with Rhonda today and hashed out her plans for the house in California that she just inherited. Originally she was going to fix it up a little - spit and polish - and then sell it. It’s a great house on a marvelous lot outside of San Francisco in this west coast picture perfect town called Pacifica. But with the housing market in the tank she probably won’t get much for it.

Being on the coast, the house has suffered a lot of weather damage and actually needs a lot more work than just spit and polish. She met with a contractor while she was out there settling the estate and he went through the house to give her a detailed estimate for repairs.

The contractor works for American Home Craft Inc and seemed to be very knowledgeable and thorough. The most pressing repair is to actually replace all the windows, especially the ones on the western exposure. Since I just went through the same ordeal with my house, I was able to give her a few pointers about replacement windows.

We checked the references for American Home Craft Inc and they have an outstanding reputation in California. They have a nice web site, too, with good information on their services and the products they recommend. When they replace windows thay have a special window just for coastal homes, called Simonton StormBreaker Plus® windows, which are energy efficient and impact resistant. All their windows come with a lifetime glass breakage warranty, so that really boosts her comfort level with that brand.

Rhonda is going out to Pacifica again next month to get some of the work started. I have a funny feeling that she is going to like it out there so much that she decides to move there permanently, or at least for a few years until the housing market improves and she can get a good price on the property.

I forgot to congratulate the Detroit Red Wings on winning the Stanley Cup last week.

I was really cheering for the Pittsburgh Penguins to win, but the Red Wings won the 6th game in the series that is best of 7, so that clinched the title for them.

The Penguins had a Cinderella season with the hottest new star, Sidney Crosby, on their team. This kid is a remarkable talent and a thrill to watch him play. He makes it all look so natural and so easy!

The Red Wings are the team that played against my favorite team, the Predators, and knocked them out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, so I guess if we had to lose to somebody it was good that we lost to the team that won the whole shabang. So, congrats to the Red Wings!

This morning the doorbell rand and the UPS guy left a box for me at the door. He knows I have a lot of dogs and he doesn’t need a signature for most deliveries, so he rings the bell and then dashes back to his truck before I can even get to the door.

The delivery was the father’s day gift I ordered just a couple days ago - a way cool flashlight from a website I came across that specializes in hobby and tactical optical products. Those are big words for some really cool guy stuff, like binoculars, rifle scopes, flashlights, etc.

I was actually looking at riflescopes for hubby, as he has really gotten into hunting again. But when I got to this site, I thought the flashlight would be a much more useful gift for year round use and maybe I’ll get the riflescope for him for Christmas. They have all the good name brands and a helpful article on the site about how to choose the right riflescope, so I know I can pick out something that he’ll really like and appreciate.

I first discovered online games way back in the early 90’s, when Microsoft launched their “Village of Games.” Now there are dozens of different sites, some with excellent graphics and large numbers of regular players from all over the world.

If I have a full hour to spend on R&R I’ll try to find a good partner and play one or two Spades games. If I only have a few minutes I’ll play something fast, like backgammon or cribbage. Sometimes I like the cutthroat strategies of Hearts to sharpen my mind. These are not time wasters as much as they are mental exercises to keep me alert and sharpen my critical thinking skills.

Tonights Round 6 game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs will be a “must-win” for Pittsburgh. If they lose to the Red Wings tonight it’s over and Detroit will have the Stanley Cup. I’m cheering for any team that plays against Detroit, so obviously I’m hoping that the Penguins will win tonight and have one more game to play in the final round of the Playoffs.

The last game was one of the most awesome, exciting, cliffhanger games I’ve ever seen. Pittsburgh took the game to three sudden death overtimes to pull the win out from under Detroit. That kind of hockey game is what hockey is all about - pure adrenalin and the guys playing with their hearts on their sleeves, giving 110% to the game.

Warren is home for the summer and his dad has informed him that this past week of sleeping until noon is his only luxury. Time for Warren to get busy and find a summer job. He had looked half-heartedly before he left school, but it’s getting serious at this point - his spending money for the next school year depends on what he can make this summer.

My friend Tom has offered him a spot on his work crew building decks on new homes. It’s good money and relatively easy to learn. The only drawback is he can’t work if it’s raining and we’ll need to spot him some money to buy a pair of good workboots.

There’s a website called Work Boots USA that gives a quick overview of the different types of boots and it carries all the major brands. You can easily tell from the short description under each photo if the boot has a soft toe, hard toe or steel toe - the type of toe you need depends upon the type of work you’ll be doing and what kind of workplace hazards you have to protect your feet from.

I told Warren that if he picks out a pair of work boots from that site I’ll put them on my charge card. They can have the boots delivered by the weekend and he can start work for Tom on Monday.

The temperature actually hit 90 degrees today for the first time this summer season. We are looking forward to a week of hot weather with the chance of scattered thunderstorms every night. Now that school is out, families are packing up the SUVs and minivans and heading to the beaches for their summer vacations. Most people in this area head south to the Florida panhandle beaches, like Destin and Ft. Walton.

At least the ones with deep enough pockets to pay for the extra cost of gas these days are going. Some of us have to stay home and be happy with a backyard splash pool until our budgets have a chance to catch up.

Saw a short headline yesterday that the NFL is going to give Pacman Jones a break and reinstate him with limitations. What a bunch of sissies that run today’s “pro” league! The integrity has evaporated and it’s nothing but money money money anymore.

I’m going to join in at work with all the NFL pick ‘em games and maybe even join a fantasy team this year. The corruption in the league is getting so obvious that even I can predict the winners of every game, so I might as well make some money off it, too.

Found a website called Addict Sports that has bulletin boards for discussions on the different sports and even has college and NFL football picks on their site. Registration is free and there is a ton of information for people serious about picking the winners when this year’s preseason “games” start up again in August.

Look out, boys! Marge is playing for your money this year!

The banks, savings & loans and credit unions are a huge modern business that are getting way too big for their britches. They have strayed so far from their mission of offering a safe place for people to put their money and a resource for the average person to buy a house.

Everything they do is about generating fees for themselves and customer service has gone out the window. I’ve had banks refuse to take my U. S. currency as a deposit to my account. I’ve had banks tell me that it is too close to their closing time (15 minutes before the doors were to close) for them to help me and to come back the next day. Now the bank where I take our company’s weekly deposit - two checks and a deposit slip - tells me that I will no longer be able to make my commercial deposit at their drive through windows. I must find a parking spot in the crowded lot and walk into the bank and stand in line with all those people who have no I.D., have accounts at other banks, and all those other time consuming banking issues, to make a deposit that takes all of 2 minutes at the drive through.

On Monday I’ll be calling their other branches to see if this is a new policy with all the locations or just the branch close to my house. If this is their policy for all locations, I’ll have to find another way to do my banking business each week.

Ever since I was a teenager I’ve loved New York City. We went on several trips to New York while in school. I’ll never forget the 8th grade trip to Manhattan. We boards large commercial buses at 3:00 in the morning and slept during most of the drive up, spent the entire day doing tourist things and drove back the same night. IT was exhausting but thrilling and I jumped at every chance after that to go to New York for another visit.

Most of my friends that left the medspa company have accepted positions with a new franchise that is based in New York. Sadly, that means most of them have had to pack up and move from here to New York. So now I don’t have the chance for the occasional lunch or cocktails to stay in touch with most of my friends. It’s down to a few emails and occasional phone calls.

Alexa is the last of the old crew to take a job with the new company. We had lunch today at our favorite Sushi place to say goodbye. She is excited about the move and I’m thrilled for her! She’s going to stay with one of our friends already there, sleeping on the futon while she looks for place of her own. To help with that I put her in touch with one of the best real estate agents in Manhattan, Dottie Herman.

Dottie is a broker with Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate, the largest real estate company in New York. I had met Dottie years ago at a real estate function in Las Vegas and kept her business card just in case I would have the opportunity to move to New York. Alas, it is Alexa who is getting that opportunity and I’m happy to share the contact information with her.

I don’t know who the others used to help them find a new home, but if I was looking for Manhattan New York real estate I would call Dottie first. As soon as Alexa finds her new condo and gets settled in, I’ll be flying to New York for a visit with my old buddies.

There is such a flurry of excitement among the women here about the hottest new movie of the summer, Sex in the City. There are at least three parties based on the SITC theme this weekend and I can’t possibly attend them all but they do sound like fun.

One of the parties is being held at the new luxury condo high rise downtown as a fund raiser, and that one has peaked my interest. They are having a menu based on the movie, with chinese take out, bottomless cosmopolitans, and cheesecake. There will be a fashion show and a surprise guest appearance - so now I REALLY have an interest in going. It would be fun to have a girls night out and celebrate a fun new movie - I think I’m talking myself into it!

My step daughter got a Cricket phone when we refused to add her to our home account. We had to take a hard stand with her and stop helping her financially - she just took advantage of us over and over and I finally put my foot down and said no more money. So she has a Cricket phone that works three weeks out of the month - the last week of the month it always seems to get shut off for non-payment and we won’t give her the money to turn it back on. Aren’t we the big meanies?

So the days when she does have cell phone service, she has a ringtone that she downloaded and it plays in the ear of the person calling until she answers the phone of it goes to voicemail. I knew the ringtone had to be a rap song - she loves that stuff - but I’ve heard the song maybe 100 times and I can’t understand the words. Then it occurred to me that I can look up the lyrics for any rap song and also listen to free ringtone samples by going to the web site called rapartists.com.

I found the song she is using for her ringtone by Kanye West called “Touch the Sky” and sure enough the full Rap Lyrics are there on the web site!
