Margret Sloan Sloan's new perspective on tech usability. Fri, 27 Jul 2007 01:33:59 +0000 en Microvision and Motorola projection deal Fri, 27 Jul 2007 01:32:41 +0000 Margret Motoraola has signed an agreement with Microvisions to put projectors in Motorola phones, as if the Razor did not have enough going for it already now it gets a projection screen as well. The timing on this release is sure to hurt the Apple IPhone sales, as  is some early problems the IPhone is having with customers. Ofcourse price will be a key factor but I imagine one day you will be able to get this type of phone free as long as you sign a agreement to use that providers services.

don’t park near this guys driveway Wed, 11 Jul 2007 15:19:13 +0000 Margret Found a funny blog page today. This guy has posted photos of people who park blocking his driveway. He’s even got little zoom windows that show the license plate of the worst offenders for inconsidrate parking practices. I have to wonder if he works at home too, so it is easy to lean the camera out the window and get a few pics when there is a lot of traffic on the street.

It looks like a tight neighborhood for parking. I hate that! I think houses should have all been built with double size driveways. I see cars parked all over the roads everywhere in my neighborhood. Americans have more than one care per house, why are there all of these driveways being built not to accommodate this? Money I’m sure - builders saving money, and we all suffer for it.

daily costs inflating Tue, 26 Jun 2007 03:59:19 +0000 Margret I don’t think there has been any news about inflation and I think that the corprate bean counters have been playing tricks and cooking the books in this country to make it seem that everything is just fine with the economy, but I do not see it this way in my daily life.

Most everything that I use on a daily basis is going up in price, and I have not had any raise in some time. I do not see my money getting better, but I do see my expenses going up. People I know are asking for loans to get through the month. I have less money to go out and party with because bottled water, soda and gas is going up. My salary is not going up to make up for it. I have seen stories talking about the price of milk will be rising, and we can be sure that everything that is made with milk will be going up as well.

The funny thing is that these numbers will eventually come out, it will eventually make a future president look bad I am sure. Because of the things being today future generations will  be suffering, and money is going to be a major issue with this trickle up economics that is going on today.

best device for handheld security camera viewing Fri, 04 May 2007 05:01:56 +0000 Margret I have seen many differnt options for getting a security camera signal to show up on a wireless motion device. But today I wonder that is the best one to consider for the most practical use? I have seen everything from tablet pcs being used for watching home security cams, to miniature 3″ lcd screens made for spytech type application. I have yet to see any programs that allow a palm handheld device or windows mobile device, but certainly there are some out there. Does anyone have any expereince with using palm sized devices (other than dedicated, single purpose devices like baby monitors).

I sometimes think that a baby monitor styles device may be most practical, if only for the cost. It may be most practical to have a small security cam viewing device in every room in the house, so having just one expensive unit that can show the video may actually be outwieghed by the convenience (and subsequent more use) of a cheaper, more readily available device.

What do you think?

motion lights - security Fri, 04 May 2007 04:56:34 +0000 Margret I love having motion lights for security. I have recently replaced my motion light, and forgot how useful it was, both as a nice way to light up the steps and car, but also for extra security. It certainly makes me feel safer.  I have been considering one of those x10 home cam systems that work inside a motion detector light. I would love to hear some feedback from other people on how well they work, or if I should choose another model.

Project Eve Thu, 26 Apr 2007 22:34:02 +0000 Margret After getting edens diamonds done I now have started to work on Project Eve which will be located at .This will sell only Diamond jewelry tailored for women. We have been busy with deciding which authoring tool to use when making this website and we may even go with an open source platform. After that it a team of us will be uploading the content and descriptions of the diamonds for weeks on end. So as you can read, alot of work is underway, so please do not be mad if I am not able to blog alot in the coming weeks I am just real busy.

April fun Wed, 11 Apr 2007 07:00:12 +0000 Margret Have been busy with outdoor activities since the good weather has come around these parts. Managed to squeeze in a movie and would like to reccommend The Lord of War starring Nicolas Cage or Nickie as I like to call him, he is my favorite actor. but for the past two days it has been quite cold so I have decided jump back behind the computer for awhile and see what is happening in cyberspace. Seems more and more of my friends are getting online these days which is great. Was steam cleaning the other day and came accross an idea for how to make it better or more user friendly, and will be posting this new idea on my friends blog, I write for from time to time called Ideas and Writings, so check it out if you have more interest in steam cleaning machine ideas. I was wondering if anyone had a great prank they played on or got played on for April fools day? Anything fun or scary will do.

Diamonds Project Mon, 19 Mar 2007 04:15:00 +0000 Margret Working with friends on a jewelry store idea that sells diamonds and other fine jewelry. After a couple months of work we have put together the website and are about ready to launch our diamond store early this April. My friends have been busy, buying up diamonds all accross the world and are seeking a good location in California for a diamond shop. Should be interesting to see just how many diamonds they do sell online versus the store front location.

Adult Age Verification Tue, 13 Mar 2007 02:28:00 +0000 Margret Many of my projects are centered around selling adults products and alot of websites mainly adult stores require some sort of age verification and some require backround checks before you can become a member or buy products from them, the question I have is does it really work? If someone young enough wanted to just click to enter a store what can be done to really indentify that the person is really of age or even who they say? To me it seems silly to have to put a page up asking a user if they are old enough to me this is the responsibilty of the computer owner not the site owner but was wondering what everyone else on the web thought about this issue and if anyone had any ideas on how to better verify a users age or identity.

Handguns Project Sat, 10 Mar 2007 20:11:52 +0000 Margret Well you probably knew it was coming if you read the last two posts Project Handguns was launched today, this is my third website I made about guns. The motto here is to have twice as many guns as anyone else on the internet for sale for the genere we feature and it looks like they may just do that. I have alot of cool ideas I want to try out in Flash and video on teh website and ofcourse get a mobile version up as soon as humanly possible so everyone on web 2.0 can access the website with ease and not long loadtimes. Have to say i am pretty impressed with what we have made thus far and ofcourse want to do with the site.

Project Shotguns Thu, 08 Mar 2007 12:54:10 +0000 Margret Have been working on the second leg of this massive project the website sells twice as many shotguns as anyone else on the internet. I did not know there were so many differnt ypes of shotguns when I started this website I mean i saw a few at walmart and gun dealerships around town but when I got the list of shotguns from my employer I was like omg and wtf I way underbid this job lol. So now I have to work double time and overtime in order to complete the clients website and i even asked for some help from friends to upload content and pictures and to do other repatative things while I work on the more complicated matters of the website design. It is going to be a girl party all this week and I am actually quite excited that it is alot more work because now my friends get to come over and stay. Thanks god all my friends have laptop computers and my network is wireless otherwise I would have to drag out some old relics from the storage shed and go thru setting them up and updating all the stuff and blah blah blah blah. One day i will have the baddest laptop on the planet and when that day comes watch out world because I will be mobile.

Current project selling rifles Tue, 06 Mar 2007 11:26:19 +0000 Margret Have been enlisted to make several websites related to selling firearms online and providing information including pictures and videos of them, Was a little hesitant at first to take on the project but decided after some time to give it a shot. The them they choose we to offer twice as many guns as anyone else so they choose to go with domains like . This site will offer twice as amny rfiles for sale as any other website on the planet and yes the guys who own it are licensed  gun dealers so there is no shadiness and the site also will require backround checks when it opens along with several other security measures to ensure guns are only sold to people who are legal to buy and own them. I have alot fo ideas on how the look of the site should be and have put together a couple of attractive examples and will soon know which template they want to use on the site. Any suggestions are welcome once the website is up from anyone out there on the design and would be greatly appreciated.

Hitachi Develops RFID Powder Wed, 28 Feb 2007 09:12:05 +0000 Margret Hitachi Develops RFID Powder

The electronics conglomerate recently showed a prototype of an RFID chip measuring a .05 millimeters square and 5 microns thick, about the size of a grain of sand. They expect to have ‘em on the market in two or three years.

The chips are packed with 128 bits of static memory, enough to hold a 38-digit ID number.

The size make the new chips ideal for embedding in paper, where they could verify the legitimacy of currency.. Read the entire story on Wireds Gadget Labs Blog one of my favorite blogs of the many they offer to read. My idea is they could be put on clothes and used to track your kids.

TivoToGo Wed, 28 Feb 2007 08:44:36 +0000 Margret TivoToGo

Now there is a way to take tivo along for the ride its easy and a free way to send television programs onto a computer or laptop. It’s available for both Mac and windows computers and works with several portable devices. to do this follow the instructions below

First, transfer recordings to your desktop or laptop.
Consider it in-flight entertainment. After you’ve downloaded and installed the TiVo Desktop software, you can begin sending shows to a networked computer in another room of the house or any wireless laptop. Then, transfer a selection of your TiVo favorites and you’re off.

Then, save recordings to your mobile device
Once the programs are transferred to a computer, the TiVoToGo software can encode them for a compatible handheld device. You can even schedule recordings and instruct the TiVoToGo software to automatically transfer new shows when they become available.
Finally, burn recordings to a DVD†
You may want to archive your TiVoToGo playlists onto DVD discs for an airplane trip or a family outing in the minivan. To burn a TiVo playlist to DVD, you’ll need MyDVD from Sonic Solutions or Roxio Toast 8. Once burned, you can menu through them on any DVD player with the same great TiVo navigation you’ve come to expect on your home TV.

Thus far I love what I ve seen so far literally found it very useful for long trips with the kids because now I can take just about any movie on the go and it keeps them busy so I can drive. I am also very anxious to see it work on my laptop for my cming up business trip to Vegas.

future security now - microdots for car parts, laptops and more Mon, 05 Feb 2007 06:34:47 +0000 Margret I came across an enticing story on Digg today that talks about some of the things that may be in use in the future to provide additional security. First thing I did was peruse the comments where people were dogging the use of software as a security device, of course I consider software a tool that may add to security if used properly, but I would never depend on computers alone for anything as important as kids.

So I expected the article to talk only about some new computer cam surveilance software, which I am always interested in seeing who is developing for what reasons, and then consider the improper ways things like this could be used. Well the software they were talking about looks pretty cool, and it’s estimated date of arrival being 2012 makes me just put it on the backburner. I would expect this technology to be used in casinos before anywhere else. Most school systems do not have big security or technlogy budgets to even consuder rolling out a new technology like this for some time, even if it is readily available in 2012 I wouldn’t expect to see this in any school yards until my kids graduate and have kids in school one day.

In one part of the article, page two, they discussed what I find as a very interesting development in micro identifying dots that can be laser etched onto cars and car parts, helping to identify stolen cars. The most important part of this article to me is the ability to use this cool security technology to micro identify a laptop, notebook or ipod. There may need to be a more visible indicator with a reward if turned it kind of a thing to make this service as effective as I would like it to be.

The fact that this company has a home version that you can apply yourself makes this a very cool future secuity product that is available today, and I hope it will have a wider adaptaption and more awareness about finding original owners of laptops, ipods and the like. very cool.

wifi everywhere but where is the security Sun, 04 Feb 2007 02:09:36 +0000 Margret I remember a time when seeing a hotel, or any other business for that matter, that said “free wifi here” was a major selling point. It was something that I would notice, it was unusual. These days it seems that free wifi is pretty much an expectation at any hotel, coffee shop, or any other place that people will congregate for more than a few minutes. With all of the money spent on wireless interent infrastructure you would think that a little more money would be spent to provide secure access.

Especially considering that so many business travelers rely on internet access and many companies assume that their workers are getting online to get more done, I am really suprised that more attention has not been given to the total lack of security.

If I had people traveling and accessing company data with the wireless access offered in many hotels and airports I would have to come up with some strong guidelines for what information they can or should not access. I am willing to bet that there have been a lot of passwords and other sensitive information leaked without businesses or their clients knowing that info is being broadcast in places that any 9th grade geek can get it and use it any way they want.

I think it would be wise for companies to consider what their employees are doing to unsecure important info. I also believe that there should be more access to secure, encrypted wifi.

Just a few thoughts on the brain right now, I hope to add more to this wifi area soon, and look forward to better security options in the future.

This is a new test Thu, 01 Feb 2007 05:48:37 +0000 Margret This is a technlogy test of the new wordpress elle edition. At this point I must say that I am not real happy with the new editor for writing, I think the onld one was better.. or maybe I am just use to the old one.. a few more posts and I guess I will redecide then..

so the new spell check that I was looking forward to at this point seems to just be a word lookup from a third party site, unless I am missing something somewhere, which is a possibility I suppose.. more on this later I am sure.

This is only a test Thu, 01 Feb 2007 04:45:57 +0000 Margret This is a test. This is only a test. This is a test.

Since this is only a test - it is also a test of my patience and more proof that technology is far from as user friendly as it could be.. jeeze.. time time time, it’s wastes to much time…

What can we do?

CSS Standards Fri, 26 Jan 2007 04:08:21 +0000 Margret Have been busy working on this new web site that focuses on CSS web Standards and follows several designers and other web sites that focus on CSS Standards such as the W3C and Web Standards group

possible scary future for cellphones - more ads Thu, 28 Dec 2006 02:51:00 +0000 Margret I read an interesting post on the w3 mobile section from Alice Pretchet about more adsphonemapgps coming to cell phones. She mentioned a very scary possibility of more ads that made me consider what it would be live to have more uninteruptable ads taking time out of my precious day. Generally the cell phone is something that I have come to rely one for fast immediate informaion. Wether it is an important phone call or a yahoo mobile map, I need that info as fast as possible. If my service started adding more ads to my cell phone experience I would definitely switch carriers and would expect that many consumers would also flock to a service for the no ads. Of course there are people who are willing to be interupted with ads for a cheaper service, hence the free411 services that are not giving you free directory information if you listen to an ad they get paid for first. I would expect my wireless carrier to allow me to terminate my contract early and take my number eleswhere should there be more interuptions in my end user expereince.

I also found some similar words of concern via Ashley Bowers’ blog.
