Its nice to do a little something extra for the people you love. For example, tuck a little not into your kid’s lunchbox or hubby’s briefcase that says you love them. Or make a special dessert and surprise them after dinner with something sweet.

My step son must be trying to find out the answer to this question. At first I thought he was deliberately trying to break it so that he would feel entitled to a new phone and upgrade his. But I’ve watched the clumsy fool and he just drops it a lot.

Last night I made an unconventional pot roast. I was interested in something fast but when you cook a cheap cut of meat, like a chuck roast or brisket, you are better off cooking it a very long time at a low temperature. That makes the meat much more tender and flavorful. But I was in a hurry for comfort food last night, so here’s what I did.

I used a Reynolds oven cooking bag and placed a cut up onion inside. Then I took the chuck roast and cut it into smaller chunks so it would cook faster and also have all the sides exposed to the gravy for more flavor. Then I added a can of tomato soup and used the same can to fill with water and added that to the bag, too. Then I sprinkled some seasoned salt and some garlic pepper over the meat, sealed the bag and let it cook at 350 for about an hour and a half.

As it finished cooking, I took a can of store brand brown gravy and dumped it into a saucepan on top of the stove. When I took the meat out of the oven, I pierced the corner of the cooking bag and let about a half cup of the bag’s gravy pour into the saucepan with the brown gravy and stirred the two together. It was fantastic – not a drop of anything was left over.

I cannot tell you the last time I went to the store and bought a newspaper. I get my news from TV and the internet. The only good thing that comes in the newspaper anymore are the store flyers and coupons over the holidays. Other than that, the Tennessean sucks – almost no actual scoops or news. Just a lot of bias and opinion, advice that I don’t want, and a rehash of stuff I already read online the night before. And their web site is crap, too. Forget about breaking news coverage from the newspaper – it’s all old news by the time the paper is printed and hits the streets.

Why are we so superstitious? Just because a day of the week falls on the monthly calendar with a date that people have deemed unlucky is no reason to freak out. For hundreds of years the date, Friday the Thirteenth, has been considered an unlucky day and date, so people go to extreme to protect themselves against the bad luck of that day. Well, some people think that 13 is a lucky number. So while some are fretting all day, others are celebrating. How strange this modern life!

I considered getting a fresh turkey, but I have had good luck with the frozen Butterball turkeys, so I decided to stick with the tried and true. Along with the turkey will be plenty of vegetables and stuffing, and I’ll make two pies this afternoon to bake while the turkey is in the oven. Can’t wait for a great turkey dinner!

This afternoon I decided to be sociable and I spent a few hours next door with my new neighbors. We made a big pitcher of Sangria. It would have been nice to sit out on the deck sipping the Sangria, but it has been rainy and cold all day, so we gathered in her living room, instead. The guys wanted to watch football, so we left them in front of the TV and went into the dining room. Julie and I sat around the table looking at photos of their trip to Cabo. I’ve never been to that part of Mexico and would love to go sometime.

Around 5, she put a couple of t-bones on the grill and we had a nice steak dinner with buttered new potatoes, fresh cut green beans and garlic bread. Nothing fancy, but it sure tasted good and it was nice to be with my new friends so I could relax and have a good time.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love a challenge and I play very competitively. So it shouldn’t surprise you that the card I pulled was the 5 of Wands:

Success in a personal battle. To stay one’s ground in the face of opposition. To compete well.

I usually play spades or sometimes cribbage or backgammon on Yahoo, but for some reason there was a little display ad about this new game and I went ahead and played it a few weeks ago just for the sake of trying something new.

You basically build a business empire making chocolates, and you have to travel the world collecting recipes and making deals to buy all the ingredients to make the chocolates, then you sell them. It has elements of problem solving and searching for clues in addition to business decisions – how much to buy? where to go next? which will be the best seller?

This weekend is the start of the county fair, which runs for 10 days at the Agricultural Center. It’s the second largest county fair held in the state and i always well attended and lots of fun for the whole family.

Of course, the kids love the arcade and rides, but they also love to see the animals and the competitions. They will have pig racing, clogging demonstrations, live concerts and all kinds of fun. I’m interested in the arts and crafts, quilting and gardening areas, and hubby wants to see the antique cars, the tractor pull and loudly proclaims that he sure wishes he could be one of the judges for the pies, cakes and cookies baking contests.

We’re thinking about taking a day as soon as hubby’s assistant manager comes back to work to cover for him. It will be nice to go to something like the county fair and experience it as adults without the distractions of having little kids to chase after and dole out money to every time we turn around.
