Glad its Friday

This week was a long and upsetting week for me. I got a lot of bad news from several different family members and several friends. I care a lot, deeply, for life and when bad things happen, my heart aches.

One of my good friends that I’ve know since the 1980′s is retired and having a lot of health problems. She had to to go to the hospital recently for total hip replacement surgery. They kept her in the hospital for 3 days and then moved her to a nursing home for the rest of her recovery and rehab – estimated to take about 8 weeks, maybe longer, depending upon her healing and progress.

I can just imagine how upsetting it must be to realize that you have to spend 2 months in a nursing home. I truly hope that the surgery goes well and that she recovers quickly.

Another good friend is dealing with serious financial issues and having problems with her bank. She is trying to work with the bank to get everything resolved, but her fiance is a hothead and every time she makes headway with the bank he gets upset and causes trouble for her. I don’t know what to say when she calls me, crying, because I cannot give her money and even though she is convinced that the lack of money is her problem, I believe that her real problem has nothing to do with money.

Word Games

As a kid I liked to play the game, Scrabble. We took the game very seriously in my family. We were all voracious readers and had large vocabularies, so the games were very interesting.

Today I found a game called Bookworm and it reminds me a little of Scrabble. I downloaded the free trial and get to play a few free games. If I like it, the purchase price is reasonable – cheaper than the Playstation and XBox games.

Getting Parents Involved

The schools are so quick to blame the sorry state of education in America on the lack of parental involvement. I say it is baloney, but let’s take it seriously for just a moment. I challenge the educators to tell me exactly what do they want the parents to do differently? What kind of involvement do they want from the parents?

If there are specific, concrete things that the educators want the parents to do that will result in a better education for the children of America, let me know exactly what the parents need to do. I will help get the word out and maybe we can turn this thing around.

Our future depends on it.

Cracked Display

These new Android phones are like little computers that also happen to connect you to someone else’s phone. I love all the apps and the built in camera. It’s like everything you need in a little black plastic box. But woe is me to anyone who drops that sucker on a hard surface, like the parking lot pavement or a sidewalk – or even the concrete floor of a grocery store. Once that little screen cracks from being dropped all the rest of that expensive mini computer is worthless.

Shopping for Party Supplies

We were going to stay home and have a quiet night on New Year’s Eve, but all of a sudden we ended up inviting people over and now we are having a party. That is fine – it just puts me in a bit of a panic to be able to buy all the party supplies, extra food, and the champagne – plus totally clean the house and make ready for a house full of people. Its been ages since we had people over for an evening – I’m actually looking forward to it.
